Vernal Anderson
September 15, 1909 - January 29, 2003

Vernal A. Anderson, age 93, of Bull Shoals, Arkansas, formerly of Marathon, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at the Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Vernal Alvin Anderson, the son of Albert Alexius Anderson and Theckla Constantia Magnusson Anderson, was born on September 15, 1909, in Kiron. He was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. He was united in marriage to Florence Teckla Hedvig Sundblad on August 19, 1936, at the home of her parents. This union was blessed with three sons: Gordon, Gerald, and Merlyn. Vernal was a farmer and farmed the same farm at Marathon from 1935 until 1976 when he and Florence moved into Marathon. Even then, he continued to go out to the farm almost daily for several years. Vernal and Florence moved to Bull Shoals, Arkansas, in March of 2001 to be near one of his sons as their health failed.

His first love was his family. His second love was his animals, especially his horses. You might say, a master horseman has been called up to manage one of God's stables.

He was also very proud of his Swedish heritage. He was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church where he served on the council in various positions. Vernal was a man of his word and expected others to do likewise.

Vernal is survived by his wife, Florence of Mountain Home, Arkansas; two sons: Gordon Anderson and his wife, Diane, of Lakeview, Arkansas, and Merlyn Anderson and his wife, Sharan, of Gretna, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Scott Anderson and his wife, Carrie, Kevin Anderson and his wife, Debra, Todd Anderson and his wife, Faith, Wendy Fenton and her husband, Conrad, Gina Young and her husband, Dagan, and Kara Anderson; two step-grandchildren: Joey Krageland and Jimmy Krageland and his wife, Jenn; ten great-grandchildren: Nolan and Rosalyn Anderson, Spencer and Riley Anderson, Izaak and Lucas Anderson; Zachary and Jessica Fenton, and Landry and Ethan Young; two step-great-grandchildren: Oliver and Ashley Kragelund; one brother: Lester Anderson and his wife Marvel; one sister: Ruth Burns; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Walter Sundblad and his wife, June, Oscar Sundblad and his wife, Nellie, Elmer Sundblad, Nev Del Anderson, Lorraine Anderson, Esther Larson and her husband, Clarence, and June Sundblad; 32 nieces and nephews and more friends than can be counted.

Preceding Vernal in death were his parents; his son, Gerald "Jerry" Anderson; two sisters: Mabel Carlson and Evelyn Anderson; three brothers: Delbert Anderson; Donald Anderson; infant brother, Harlan Anderson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Irving Carlson, Clifford Burns, Karl and Julia Sundblad, George Sundblad, Dorothy Sundblad, and infant granddaughter, Kathy Anderson.

A funeral service was held on Monday, February 3, 2003, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Interment was in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon.
