Dr. John R. Gouldin - June 25, 1943 - July 16, 2010

Dr. John R. Gouldin, age 67, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

John Robert Gouldin, the son of Robert E. and Ilah H. (Lister) Gouldin, was born at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 25, 1943.

He received his education at Cedar Rapids, and John was a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School. John began his college education at William Penn College at Oskaloosa, Iowa, and later graduated from the University of Iowa. He received his medical degree from the Dr. William S. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.

John faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from September 25, 1961, to September 24, 1967.

John was united in marriage to Cheryl A. Malmgren on June 7, 1969, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and this couple has been blessed with four children: Shawn, Heidi, Holly, and Rachel.

Following their marriage, John and Cheryl resided on the Oakdale campus of the University of Iowa. While he was obtaining his podiatric degree, they lived in Chicago, Forest Park, and Oak Park, Illinois.

He began his professional career at Elkader, Iowa, where he and his family made their home for 16 years. In January of 1995, Dr. Gouldin opened his practice in Storm Lake where he cared for his many patients until the last few weeks.

John was a man with many varied interests which included fishing, gourmet cooking, sailing, and skeet shooting. He’s lovingly remembered for his jovial sense of humor and also as a man who was always eager to share his wealth of knowledge with others. John was a very compassionate person who generously helped many people in need, both with his time and financial assistance. He also possessed a literary talent and wrote many poems his family and friends still enjoy. John was also very committed to the communities he lived and worked in and believed in supporting them by doing his shopping and business “at home.”

John’s memory will always be loved, honored, and cherished by his family which include his wife, Cheryl, of Storm Lake, IA; his children: Shawn (Marie) Gouldin of Firth, NE; Heidi (Walter) Long of Indianola, IA; Holly (Adam) Espenhover of Columbus, GA; and Rachel (Jason) Siegel of Ofallon, MO; his grandchildren: Walter John, Grant, Katherine, Ryan, Andrew John, Ethan, Jocelyn, and Connor; his two sisters and their husbands: Sybil (Roger) Hunziker of Lake City, FL, and Rebecca (Richard) Goltermann of Lockport, IL; other extended family and the many friends he made throughout this lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 19, 2010, at the Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta, Iowa. Inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop, Iowa, on Tuesday, July 20, 2010.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given in John's name to the Summit Evangelical Free Church for youth scholarships used to help the youth participate in various church opportunities.
