Vida Rice, 103, of Storm Lake and former long time resident of Cherokee, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake where she had been a resident for the past four and one half years.

Vida E., the daughter of David and Lucy Ellen (Smith) Thomson, was born April 8, 1897, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County. She attended country school in Grant Township and high school in Storm Lake.

In 1918 she married Raymond Rice. She lived in the Storm Lake area until 1927 when she moved to Cherokee.

Mrs. Rice was active in her neighborhood and church and cared for many people in her home. She enjoyed interviews regarding her life in three centuries, birthday parties and calls from friends. She also spent time baking bread, making rugs and tatting Bible crosses for the third grade Sunday School class. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son Edward; one daughter Doris Campbell and three sisters: Winnie Mallison, Nellie Koons and Edna Waterbury.

Mrs. Rice is survived by two sons: Glenn and his wife June Rice of Storm Lake and Virgil and his wife Betty Rice of Sioux City; three daughters: Loreen Carpenter of Storm Lake, Ellen Henderson of Cherokee and Veda Santos of Fairfield, Calif.; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rice will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee with Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating.

A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held today, March 8, 2001, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
