Ervin A. Grundmeier - June 5, 1916 - Jan. 20, 2008

Ervin August Grundmeier, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, January 20, 2008, at Liberty Heights Manor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, following a recent bout of pneumonia.

Ervin was born June 5, 1916, in Schaller, Iowa, the son of August Frederick and Marie (Ploeger) Grundmeier. The family farmed in Schaller and Ervin attended the Sac County schools. He helped his father and others in the area with their farming. He also ran the Standard Oil Station in Schaller before starting farming on his own.

On November 27, 1941, he was united in marriage to Mildred Ruth Engelmann at the Reformed Church, rural Schaller. The couple farmed in Hayes and then Maple Valley Townships for over 40 years.

Ervin was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake where he was an Elder and also a member of the Chancel Choir for over 35 years. He helped start the Food for Life program in Storm Lake and was part of the committee to start the Presbyterian Camp in Okoboji.

Ervin was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 20 years and also enjoyed pitching horseshoes with the Alta Horseshoe Club.

His family includes seven children: Patricia Butcher and her husband Frank of Parker, CO, Donald Grundmeier of San Luis Obispo, CA, Dr. Annette Grundmeier of Olathe, KS, Mary Rowe and her husband David of Colorado Springs, CO, James Grundmeier and his wife Susan of Urbandale, IA, Jane Wynn and her husband Frank of Parker, CO, and John Grundmeier and his wife Mary of Carroll, IA; 12 grandchildren: Kari and Mukund Sreenivasan, Kimberly and David Drutz, Stephanie Harms, Scott Harms, Kevin Harms, Todd and Kelly Grundmeier, Christopher Rowe, Jason and Sandi Rowe, Lucas Grundmeier, Thomas Grundmeier, Michelle Grundmeier, and Cyierria Grundmeier; and 6 great-grandchildren: Raj, Madeline and Tatiana Sreenivasan, Cassidy Drutz, and Jordan and Kaylee Rowe.

Also surviving are two brothers, Art Grundmeier and Mel Grundmeier, and one sister, Gladys Kestel.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred; his parents; one brother, Harold Grundmeier; and one sister, Viola Dills.

Memorial services for Mr. Grundmeier will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2008, at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends.

Memorials in Ervin’s honor may be directed to the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.
