Wilberta Mae Dannenberg - Nov. 15, 1913 - Mar. 18, 2008
Wilberta Mae “Billie” Dannenberg, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.
Billie was born November 15, 1913, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Beatrice (Littell) Caldwell. She spent her youth with her family in Storm Lake where she attended grade school through high school. She graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1930.
On November 16, 1931, Billie was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Dannenberg in Beatrice, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with three children: Marilyn, Linda and Jon.
Billie was a loving wife and devoted mother who loved keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. She also worked side by side with Larry at the Willow Motel in Storm Lake until 1964. A faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Billie served as head of the UMW funeral committee for years. She was also a member of Chapter EP of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Her hobbies were playing bridge and knitting.
Billie learned to knit in the 1940s from a neighbor. When she later heard of the Red Cross’ request to contribute knitted scarves, hats and mittens, Billie knitted many scarves which were sent to the soldiers. Billie’s care and concern for others didn’t stop there. For many years, Billie knitted the little pink and blue hats that new babies wore home from the hospital. Between 1987 and 1994, Billie counted that she knitted 2,263 little hats for babies born at BV Regional Medical Center. Many more caps, lap-size and baby-size afghans were created by Billie over the years and donated to a variety of organizations including Mr. Goodfellow, Goodwill Industries, Gingerbread House in Storm Lake, and the United Methodist Church where they were distributed to children and others who most needed them.
Billie’s priority in life was always her family, and she treasured every moment she spent with them. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Marilyn Rehnstrom of Spencer, Iowa, and Linda (Vernon) Wade of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren: Anne Rehnstrom of Des Moines, Iowa; Mark (Monica) Rehnstrom of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Jay (Bucky) Rehnstrom of Sioux Rapids; Jonna (Rick) Tornquist of Tucson, Arizona; Shelly (Paul) Carver of Tucson; Jason Dannenberg of Anthon, Iowa; and Todd (Melissa) Dannenberg of Boise, Idaho; 12 great-grandchildren; close family friend, Jan Travis; nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Billie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence, in 1995; her son, Jon Dannenberg; her grandson, Steven Rehnstrom; son-in-law Don Rehnstrom; and one sister, Frances Hix.
Memorial services for Mrs. Dannenberg will be held at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
