Marjorie McGowan - June 28, 1919 - Mar. 28, 2008
Marjorie McGowan, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at her residence in Storm Lake.
Marjorie Opal Ashbrook was born June 28, 1919, in Rockwell City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (Wisthoff) Ashbrook. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed her faith as a youth. Marjorie received her education at Jolley, Iowa, graduating from Jolley High School in 1936.
On February 17, 1941, Marjorie was united in marriage to Vincent A. McGowan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Pomeroy, Iowa. The couple was blessed with eleven children: Patricia, Robert, Karen, Sharon, Ronald, Richard, William, Janice, Michael, Larry, and Judy. The couple lived in Marathon, Iowa, until they moved to Storm Lake in 1982.
Marjorie was a loving and devoted wife and mother who treasured her family and loved keeping a warm comfortable home for them. She loved flowers and enjoyed tending her garden of flowers as well as the vegetables she grew to preserve for winter meals for her family. She took great enjoyment from meeting and greeting her neighbors at their various coffee times. Marjorie was an avid reader of all types of books and loved a good game of cards. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Catholic Daughters of America, and St. Mary’s Guild.
Marjorie will be remembered as a kind and caring person. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Patricia of Storm Lake; Robert (Fran) McGowan of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Karen (Monte) Leiting of Carroll, Iowa; Sharon (Howard) Weitl of Audubon, Iowa; Ronald McGowan of Lakewood, Colorado, Richard McGowan of Des Moines, Iowa; William McGowan and special friend, Barb DeWitte of Lakewood, Colorado; Jan (Richard) Nelson of Manson, Iowa; Michael (Janet) McGowan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Larry (Wendy) McGowan of Lakewood, Colorado; and Judy (Kelly) Netsch of Storm Lake; 14 grandsons: Tony (Melissa) McGowan, Dan McGowan, Bob Lenz, John (Angie) Weitl, Mike Weitl, Dan (Tina) Drysol, Chad Allen, Christopher Nelson, Colten Nelson, Sean McGowan, Luke McGowan, Patrick McGowan, Nick Netsch, and Tyler Netsch; eight granddaughters : Sherri (Bob) Harms, Angie (Lorne) Hupp, Kelly (Craig) Miller, Kayleen (Sam) Bertman, Amanda Roed, Stephanie Allen, Courtney Nelson, and Jessica (Doug) O’Bannon; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Raymond “Bud” (Suzanne) Ashbrook of Sun City , Arizona; and Bill (Shirley) Ashbrook of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Jean (Dave) Van Fleet of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Schmakede of Arthur, Iowa; and Gwen Ashbrook of Eager, Arizona; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vincent; sister, Mary Pirie and her husband, Kenneth; brother Frank Ashbrook and his wife, Betty; brother Jim Ashbrook; brother Charles Ashbrook Jr.; and infant twins, Irma and Phillip Ashbrook.
A Funeral Mass for Mrs. McGowan was celebrated Monday, March 31, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Reverends Bruce Lawler and Paul Kelly concelebrated the Mass for Christian Burial. Burial is in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. A rosary was recited at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service was held at 7:00 p.m., both at the funeral home.
