Marvel V. Olsen, age 77, of Newell, Iowa, died on Monday, April 28, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Marvel V. Olsen was born May 7, 1930, in Newell, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Agnes (Bellows) Olsen. He was baptized at First Baptist Church. He attended grade school at Coon Center Country School and graduated from Newell High School in 1947.

After graduation, Marvel worked with his father on the family farm until 1951 when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served our country during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 and returned to farming.

On March 14, 1954, Marvel married Edith Osborne at the First Baptist Church in Newell. The couple was blessed with four children: Tom, Becky, Julie and Linda.

Throughout his life, Marvel was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church and served two terms on the Newell-Providence School Board. He was a big part of his grandchildren’s lives and supported each and every one of their activities. Marvel was a faithful and devoted husband, father and grandfather; he will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Edith; children: Tom (Marty) Olsen of Newell; Becky (Jim) Brown of Hudsonville, Michigan; Julie (Rick) Staley of Charter Oak, Iowa; Linda (Steve) Culp of Newell; grandchildren: Mark Olsen (fiancé, Valerie), Kurt (Beth) Olsen, Peter Olsen, Philip (Stephanie) Brown, Eric Brown, Tyler (Sarah) Brown, Emily Brown (fiancé Joe), Alyssa, Ryan, Katie and Matthew Staley, and Kristen, Sarah, Rachel and Beth Culp; and one great-grandson, Landon Brown.

Marvel was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Agnes; and brothers Lynn Robert, Lawrence, and Arnold.

Funeral service for Mr. Olsen will be held Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell where the family will be present.
