Merle Kahuda, 97, a long-time Storm Lake resident, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake following a brief illness.

Merle August was born March 19, 1903, in Greene, the daughter of Joseph and Augusta Louise (York) Kahuda. She graduated from Greene High School in 1921. She then graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in Home Economics education and also continued graduate work studies at the university.

Ms. Kahuda was a home economics teacher for 39 years, spending the last 30 years of her career at Storm Lake High School.

She was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, was on the board of deacons and the council for Christian education. She was a 50-year member of P.E.O. Chapter EP, a 70-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ingleside, Delphian Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, a life-time member of the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary, Storm Lake Area Arts Council and a past member of A.A.U.W. and B.P.W.

Ms. Kahuda was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by five nieces: Phyllis and her husband Virgil Runge of Nora Springs, Kathleen Walston of Manchester, Elaine and her husband Rev. Donald Neeley of South Bend, Ind., Maxine Kahuda of Eugene, Ore. and Margaret Booth of Story City; one nephew Donald Cottrell of Dallas, Texas; numerous grand-nieces and nephews; long-time friends Jane and Jack Spooner of Storm Lake; many other extended family members and friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Kahuda will be held Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Rev. Duane Queen and Rev. Donald Neeley will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. The Fratzke Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at Fratzke Funeral Home after noon on Sunday with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.
