Dr. Robert James Potter, age 82, of Newell, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, July 10, 2008.

Robert James Potter was born November 14, 1925, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Laurens Day and Linda (Heise) Potter. He was baptized into the Christian faith in the Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Robert received his early education at the Hayes School in rural Storm Lake before graduating from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1942. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45, he continued his education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and then at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he received his Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine degree in 1949.

On November 29, 1945, Robert and Phyllis Irene Tymeson were united in marriage in San Francisco, California. The couple was blessed with two children, Page and Stacey.

Dr. Potter enjoyed a successful veterinarian practice in the Storm Lake area for many years until his retirement. One of his proudest accomplishments was the Ken-A-Bob buffet; he enjoyed eating and visiting with the patrons and staff and continued to meet with the Ken-A-Bobbers. His passion was duck and goose hunting, and he enjoyed horse races and pheasant hunting. An advocate of conservation and safe hunting practices, Robert was a founding member of the Buena Vista Ducks Unlimited organization.

Robert’s family was always his first priority, and he treasured the time he spent with his children and extended family and his special friend. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Dr. Page (Beth) Potter of Bowlus, Minnesota; his daughter, Stacey (Doug) Terrill of Spirit Lake, Iowa; his grandchild, Spring Sullivan of Milford, Iowa; his great-grandchildren: Sierra Sullivan, Andrew Sullivan and Megan Sullivan; sisters Patty Obye of Kentucky and Maxine Stewart of California; sister-in-law Kitty Tymeson of Florida; his special friend, Nancy Heckathorn of Newell; extended family and many friends.

Dr. Potter was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Phyllis, on August 27, 2003.
