Verlond “Barney” P. Campbell - Jan. 8, 1923 - Aug. 16, 2008

Verlond “Barney” P. Campbell, age 85, of Valley Center, Kansas, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Barney was born on January 8, 1923, to Harry and Ruth (Miller) Campbell in Rockwell City, Iowa. He initially attended grade school in Carroll, Iowa. Barney was primarily raised by his uncle and aunt, Leon and Julia Galbraith, and consequently he attended Lincoln-Lee school in rural Buena Vista County. He graduated in 1940 from Lincoln-Lee High School.

Following graduation from high school, Barney enrolled at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where he attended until he was called into military service. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Philippines and during the occupation of Japan.

Barney was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. During his time in Storm Lake, he was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. After moving closer to his family in Valley Center, Kansas, Barney attended the First United Methodist Church.

On June 18, 1944, Barney was united in marriage to Georgia E. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. This union was blessed with two sons: Bruce and Brian.

Before moving his family to Storm Lake, Barney and Georgia lived in Le Mars, Iowa. During this time, Barney was responsible for starting the Le Mars Little League Association.

The Campbell family later made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Barney was the owner of a local shoe store and an active community member. He was the founding president of the Storm Lake Lions Club. In addition to his civic duties, Barney lovingly cared for the flowers in the planter boxes in downtown Storm Lake and by the railroad on West Fifth Street. He was known for the beautiful roses he cultivated.

Above all, Barney cherished the many years he spent with Georgia and found comfort in moving to live closer to his sons. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons: Bruce Campbell and his wife Martha, and Brian Campbell, all of Valley Center, Kansas; three grandchildren: Michael Campbell of Kansas City, Kansas; Carrie Jo Campbell of Dallas, Texas; and Chelsea Campbell of Yankton, South Dakota; extended family and a host of friends.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Georgia; brothers Donald and Duane; and sisters Rojean Howe and Virginia Romaine.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastor Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Those wishing to send on-line condolences may do so via: www.fratzkejensen.com .
