Era Hyllested - Sept. 20, 1911 - Aug. 31, 2008
Era Hyllested, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, August 31, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Era Tillman was born September 20, 1911, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, to William and Mary (McIntyre) Tillman. She was raised in the Storm Lake area and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1930. Following graduation, Era was employed at Northwest Bell Telephone in Storm Lake until she was married to Sidney Hyllested in 1932. The couple was blessed with three daughters: Sally, Sandra and Sharon. The girls recall that upon their arrival home from school each afternoon, they would call, “Hi, Mom!” and Era was always there to answer them and welcome them home from their school day.
Era had been a member of the United Methodist Church for many years, joining when she was a young child. She also enjoyed her involvement in the Buena Vista Hospital Auxiliary and Witter Gallery, both in Storm Lake. Era and her husband enjoyed golfing together and playing bridge. When their grandchildren came in their later years, they found a special place in their hearts for them and loved following all their many sports events and activities. Era enjoyed playing the piano whenever she found the time and loved her winters in California and Arizona. She treasured her family and believed that her involvement with them was what made life so very good. A loving wife, devoted mother and cherished grandmother, Era will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She leaves to mourn her three daughters: Sally Tryon of North Liberty, Iowa; Sandy (Ted) Edwards of Carroll, Iowa; and Sharon (Jim) Ruliffson of Hudgens, Virginia; grandchildren: Mike (Cindy) Tryon of Iowa City, Iowa; Shelly (Scott) Myers of Ames, Iowa; Mark Tryon of Dallas, Texas; Brad (Janice) Edwards of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Kelly (Tom) Treinen of Noblesville, Indiana, Tyler (Edie) Edwards of Carroll, Iowa; Lisa Nelson of Gwynn, Virginia; and Craig Ruliffson of Hudgens, Virginia; great-grandchildren: Matt Myers, Michael Tryon, Brandon Tryon, Ashley Grady, Leah Myers, Zach Edwards, Abby Edwards, Sam Edwards, Riley Edwards, Chuck Russo, Christy Russo, Katie Nelson, Kelly Nelson, Meredith Treinen, Madelyn Treinen, Michele Treinen, Dylan Bordenaro, Drew Edwards and Dawson Edwards; one great-great-grandchild: Trayton Grady; one sister, Velma Gilbert of Edmond, Oklahoma; extended family and friends.
Era was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one great-grandson, Michael Treinen.
Memorial services for Mrs. Hyllested will be held on Thursday, September 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial, which will precede the start of the memorial service, will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home at 300 Cayuga Street in Storm Lake where the family will greet friends.
