Vernon E. “Pete” Peters, age 62, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at his home.
Vernon Earl Peters was born September 1, 1946, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Essie and Susan (Harris) Peters. Pete, as he was known, spent his youth in the Newell, Iowa, area where he received his education and graduated from Newell High School in 1965.
In 1968, Pete was united in marriage to Jackie Austin in Sac City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two daughters: Darcy and Angie. Later Shane Schlicht would join their family. Pete worked a number of years in maintenance and security until illness forced his retirement on October 29, 2007.
Pete loved being outdoors for any reason. He enjoyed gardening and caring for his lawn and yard. He and his family made many happy memories on their camping excursions, and friends were always welcome to join them. Pete was an avid fisherman. He recently has enjoyed the companionship of Izzie, a new puppy.
Pete’s greatest treasure in this life was his family, for whom he cared very deeply. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 40 years, Jackie Peters of Storm Lake; his daughter, Darcy (Corey) Reese of Estherville, Iowa; his daughter, Angie Dirks (special friend, Rod) of Storm Lake; son Shane Schlict (special friend, Wendy) of Sac City, Iowa; grandchildren: Kendra Kaylee Peters, Kaylysa Ladner, Kody Ladner, Cheryll Ann Kidd, Damien Fisher, Dallas Dirks, and Anthony Schlicht; brothers: Ross “Sonny” (Nancy) Peters of Moberly, Missouri, and John Peters (special friend, Mary) of Fort Dodge, Iowa; brother-in-law Colin Austin of Arizona; sister-in-law Peggy Niles of Lake City, Iowa; niece Tracy Brown of Omaha, Nebraska; niece-in-law Shauna Chase of Des Moines, Iowa; extended family and many friends.
Waiting for him to join them are those who preceded Pete in death: his parents, Essie and Sue Peters; his parents-in-law, Everett and Irene Austin; brother Kenny Peters; brother-in-law Larry Austin; sister-in-law ReNae Austin; cousin Larry Jo Peters; his paternal and maternal grandparents as well as several aunts and uncles.
