Arnold Rasmussen, age 83, of Newell, died Friday, April 27, 2007, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Arnold Nels Rasmussen was born on May 7, 1923, in rural Newell, Iowa, the son of Axel and Anna (Svendsen) Rasmussen. He received his education and graduated from Nemaha High School. Following graduation, Arnold attended Iowa State University for one year and Buena Vista College for two years.

Arnold was an active, lifelong member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. He was baptized and confirmed there and served on the church council and as church council president.

On November 24, 1946, Arnold was united in marriage to Ellen Arlene Lund at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. This union was blessed with five children: Teresa, Marsha, Rodney, Lisa and Layne. They raised their children in the Newell area where Arnold farmed and later sold insurance, retiring in 1993.

Arnold was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Newell American Legion Post 193; Newell Park Board; Danish Brotherhood State Vice President; Meals on Wheels; Newell Senior Citizens; Men’s Golf; German Mutual Insurance Agency Board member; and Newell Chamber. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed woodworking, operating the combine after retiring, singing in church choir, playing cards and listening to 40’s and 50’s music. His family brought him much enjoyment and pride over the years as he delighted in the times they spent together. He cherished the times he attended his children’s and grandchildren’s many sporting events and school programs.
