Roland L. Geyer - Oct. 14, 1917 - Oct. 21, 2007

Roland L. Geyer, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and longtime businessman from Early, Iowa, died Sunday, October 21, 2007, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Roland Louis Geyer was born October 14, 1917, in Early, Iowa, the son of Fred and Mabel (Halboth) Geyer. He was baptized into the Christian faith at the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. He received his education at a country school near Odebolt.

In 1939, Roland was married to Dorothy Mae Morey. They welcomed their son, Tod Allen, in 1959. The couple farmed in the Odebolt area from 1940 until 1950 at which time they purchased and moved to a farm south of Early. Roland raised purebred Spotted Poland China hogs and had a herd of Guernsey dairy cattle. An avid horseman, Roland bought, sold, trained and showed Palomino quarter horses for 24 years. In 1981, the couple bought a home and moved into Storm Lake where they lived happily until Dorothy passed away in 1993. In April 2006, Roland moved to Otsego Place in Storm Lake.

During his farming years, Roland worked part-time for USDA/ASCS from 1954 to 1957. In 1958, Roland became a federal crop insurance agent. He served as chairman of the Iowa Agents Association from 1975 to 1981. He was a charter member of the National Agent Association, organized in 1977, and was appointed treasurer of this association. In 1981, Roland helped organize the present National Association of Crop Insurance Agents (NACIA). He also served as a past treasurer of the NACIA. Roland’s son, Tod, and friend, Phil Fanning, joined Roland as partners in the Roland Geyer Agency in Early in 1985.

Despite keeping up with his farming and business interests, Roland always put his family first. He always stressed the importance of a family vacation each year. He loved to travel in the western states of the U.S. A loving husband and devoted father, Roland’s caring ways will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Tod Geyer of Early; many nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; three brothers: Darrell Geyer, Fay Geyer and Leo Geyer; and three sisters: Eva Geyer, Esther Bettin and Edna Obman.

Funeral Services for Mr. Geyer will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Reverend Duane Queen will officiate. Burial will be in the Odebolt Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
