Amos Simon - July 25, 1918 - Mar. 6, 2007

Amos John Julius Simon, age 88, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at Storm Lake, Iowa.

Amos John Simon, the son of Firman Martin and Mary (Pfeiffer) Simon, was born on July 25, 1918, at Early, Iowa. Amos was the oldest of nine children. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. The family farmed in the Early and Odebolt areas until moving to Sioux Rapids in 1932. Amos was a 1936 graduate of the Sioux Rapids Consolidated School.

He was united in marriage to Helen Marie Mueller of Peterson, Iowa, on November 30, 1939. This union was blessed with six children: Carol, Ken, Dick, Darwin, Virginia, and Bonnie. Amos was engaged in farming in the Sioux Rapids area and he was very devoted to his vocation. In addition to farming, he was also employed by Ranco in Sioux Rapids for over 30 years. A loving and devoted husband, father, and family man, Amos was proud to be from Sioux Rapids. He fondly remembered the years that he and Helen spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. Amos had a keen memory, enjoyed people and was a friend to everyone. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Sioux Rapids.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen of Sioux Rapids; his children: Carol (Bob) Stoop of Henderson, Nevada; Ken of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dick of Havelock, Iowa; Darwin (Jacquelyn Elfmann) of Des Moines, Iowa; Virginia (Tom) Rabel of Fostoria, Iowa; and Bonnie Somers of Dallas, Texas; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Wilson of Cortez, Colorado; four brothers: Frances Simon of Odebolt, Iowa; Al (Dawn) Simon of Colorado Springs, Colorado; George (Shirley) Simon of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; and Paul (Betty) Simon of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Mary Louise and Richard Dale; a great-grandson, Nicholas Thomas; a daughter-in-law: Barbara Simon; his sister, Caroline; and his two brothers: Don and Clarence.

He will be missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral mass for Mr. Simon will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids with Reverend Al Reicks conducting the Mass for Christian Burial. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids during which time the family will be present. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
