Clara L. Martin, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Clara Luscinda Clever, the daughter of Clarence N. and Carrie I. (Moore) Clever, was born at Storm Lake, Iowa, on February 1, 1918. She lived her youth with her parents in rural Buena Vista County on the family farm. Clara received her education at Truesdale, Iowa. She was baptized at the Assembly of God Bible Camp on Casino Beach in 1929.
Clara was united in marriage to Russell Henry Martin on October 27, 1934, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The couple was blessed with six children: Berton, Charlotte, Lorraine, Ernest, Raymond, and Patricia. During their 32 years of marriage, the couple farmed together in the Rembrandt and Newell areas. Clara moved from the farm, which was located east of Newell, to Storm Lake in 1966 where she was employed by the Buena Vista County Hospital as a cook and salad maker in their dietary department from 1963 to June 25, 1982. She was a member of the Faith United Assembly of God Church in Storm Lake.
Clara’s special interests included crocheting, quilting, playing cards and baking. She especially enjoyed preparing meals and spending time with her family. Her kind and caring ways will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Those who will always cherish her memory include her children: Berton and Jean Martin of Newell, Iowa; Lorraine (Eve) Lund of Moriarty, New Mexico; and Patricia and Bob Schossow of Rodney, Iowa; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her longtime friend, June Mason and husband Rick of Storm Lake; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell, on June 17, 1966; one daughter, Charlotte; two sons, Raymond and Ernest; one grandchild, Wanda Sue Martin; three sisters: Lovicy (Mrs. Wayne Davis), Laurel (Mrs. Henry Jensen), and Cora (Mrs. James Jensen); two brothers and a sister-in-law: William Clever and John and Myrtle Clever.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2007, at Faith United Assembly of God in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2007, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present.
