Russell Johnson, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, died March 26, 2010, at his home in Newell.

Russell LeRoy Johnson was born to Adolph and Bertha (Seberg) Johnson on a farm east of Nemaha, Iowa, on September 4, 1919. He was raised on the family farm and attended Delaware Township country school and graduated from Nemaha High School in 1937.

On November 1, 1941, Russell was united in marriage to Dorothy Thomsen in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with seven children: Janis, Karen, Denise, Terry, Tim, Lea Ann and Deb. Russell lived and raised his family on their farm south of Newell.

Russell served his country in the United States Army, entering into the service on June 5, 1945. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1945.

Russell farmed most of his life until he retired. Following his retirement, he did janitorial work and continued working on the farm for his nephew. Russell enjoyed fishing, golfing, and treasured spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Terry (Liz) Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; Tim (Sheryl) Johnson of Newell, Iowa; Janis Dewey of Varina, Iowa; Karen (Tom) Rice of Johnston, Iowa; Denise Petershagen of Queen Creek, Arizona; Lea Ann (Malcolm) McKinney of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Deb (Dan) Bonnema of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; his sister, Opal Telleen of Boulder, Colorado; sister-in-law, Ella Belle Johnson of Sac City, Iowa; brothers-in-law; Eggert (Inez) Thomsen and Robert (Donna) Thomsen; extended family and friends.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Bertha Johnson; his wife, Dorothy; five brothers: Arthur, Paul, Alve, Cleo and Raymond; his grandson, Michael Petershagen; grandson-in-law, Dalin Haradon; great grandson, Justin Dewey; two sons-in-law, Melvin Dewey and Gerald “Pete” Petershagen; and daughter-in-law, Linda Johnson.

Visitation: 4-8:00 p.m. March 18, 2010, at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, Iowa
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. March 19, 2010, at United Methodist Church in Newell, Iowa
Interment: March 19, 2010, at Newell Cemetery in Newell, Iowa
