She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1921 at the Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake, Iowa, and was later confirmed in 1934. She also attended Parochial School at Zion Lutheran Church.

During this time, Alma and her family resided on a farm near Albert City. Alma was employed as a cook at the BV Hospital for 24 years before her retirement in 1996.

Alma was a faithful and lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Ladies Aid as well as the Body and Soul Bible Study for many years. She was also associated with the Has Beens Card Club and loved a good card game with family and friends.

One of the many joys in Alma’s life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking wonderful meals, baking her famous oatmeal rolls and gardening in her beautiful flower garden. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Carol (Tom) Benedict of Davis City, Iowa, Dennis (Janeen) Hogrefe of Albert City, Gary (Julie) Hogrefe of Albert City, and Randy (Sandy) Hogrefe of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Julie (Chad) Bjork of Laurens, Iowa, Clint (Greta) Hogrefe of Meriden, Iowa, Andrea Hogrefe of Omaha, Nebraska, Mandy Galbraith of Storm Lake, Stacie (Tim) Rice of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Scott Hogrefe of Stout, Iowa, Molly (Aaron) Tucker of Des Moines, Iowa, Tony Hogrefe of West Branch, Iowa, Tim Hogrefe of Albert City, Tricia Hogrefe of Albert City, Debbie Benedict of Shenandoah, Iowa, Laura Scott of Smithville, Texas, and Tony (Judi) Fuller of Des Moines; great-grandchildren: Mallory, Madelyn, Makayla, and Maxwell Bjork, Brenden Rice, Tanner and Gracie Galbraith, and Sidney Scott; sister: Marie Franzmeier of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law: Edna Brummer of Albert City, Delores Hogrefe of Lowell, Arkansas, and Mae Zeman of Storm Lake; extended family and a host of friends.
