Helen Hogrefe - Oct. 26, 1918 - Dec. 1, 2006

Helen Hogrefe, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Alta, Iowa, died on Friday, December 1, 2006, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Helen Emma Louise Zwemke was born on October 26, 1918, in rural Alta, Iowa, to Carl and Emma (Glienke) Zwemke. She was baptized on November 10, 1918, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover and later confirmed in 1932. During her early years of education, Helen attended parochial school in Hanover, graduating from Alta High School in 1937.

On August 25, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Harold Hogrefe in Hanover. This ceremony was officiated by Rev. O. Bahr. To this union three children were born: Harlan, Richard and Diane.

For 25 years, Helen worked as a nurse aid at the nursing home in Alta and the Alta Hospital. She also was a proud homemaker who took great pride in providing a safe and comfortable home for her children. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the Camera Club. In addition to her involvement in several clubs, Helen enjoyed playing Bingo, participating in Bible studies and traveling to see her children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Harlan Hogrefe and his wife, Norma, of Onalaska, Wisconsin; Richard Hogrefe and his wife, Virginia, of San Jose, California; and Diane Chandler and her husband, Ronald, of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren: Lauri Stettler and her husband, Scott, of Holmen, Wisconsin; Debra Racette and her husband, Charles, of Dallas, Georgia; Jason Hogrefe of Atlanta, Georgia; Denise Kelley and her husband, Shawn, of Holmen, Wisconsin; Michelle Hogrefe of San Jose, California; Matthew Hogrefe of San Jose, California; Jari Farr and her husband, Monte, of Millville, Pennsylvania; Tony Chandler and his wife, Darcy, of Battle Creek, Michigan; and Michael Chandler and his wife, Amy, of Apple Valley, California; eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Zwemke of Chicago, Illinois; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Preceding Helen in death are her husband, Harold Hogrefe, on February 24, 1970; parents Carl and Emma Zwemke; two brothers, Charles and Walter Zwemke; two sisters, Adela and Irene Zwemke; and three sisters-in-law: Adeline Zwemke, Grace Zwemke and May Zwemke.

Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa, with Pastor Craig Cummins officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, December 4, 2006, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
