Bernard “Bud” McDermott, age 81 of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Bud was born November 10, 1923, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to John B. and Alma (Garrison) McDermott. He received his education in the Storm Lake school system, graduating from high school in 1941. He proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Force during World War II. Bud was a patriot and long-time member of the VFW. He was a faithful and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he served as a Eucharistic minister.

On October 22, 1946, Bud was united in marriage to Imelda Pitts in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with two sons: John and Alan, and six daughters: Peg, Mary, Connie, Georgia, Cindy and Denise.

Bud was employed at the Hy-Grade plant in Storm Lake for many years in the maintenance area. He retired in 1981 at the age of 59 years. He liked working on building projects in his spare time.

He was a devoted father and husband who loved to spend time with his family. The McDermotts liked to go camping and enjoyed fishing. Bud always had the patience to help the kids bait their hooks and see that they had a good time. He was a kind and good person who went out of his way to be helpful to elderly people. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: John McDermott (Denise) of Bettendorf, Iowa, Alan McDermott (Stacy) of LeMars, Iowa, Peg Gutta of Anamosa, Iowa, Mary (Dennis) Hurd of Bettendorf, Iowa, Connie (Leonard) Schimmel of Rock Island, Illinois, Georgia (Carl) Rivenbark of Jensen Beach, Florida, Cindy (Carl) Hansen of Storm Lake, and Denise McDermott and special friend, David Eliason, of Alta, Iowa; grandchildren: John Gutta, Michael, Jody and Kelly Hurd, Angela Thomas, Julie Madden, Betsy Semotan, Justin and Seth Hansen, Nyna Anderson, Adam and Jessica McDermott, Blair Syndergaard, Rachel and Breana McDermott; six great-grandchildren; sister Verna “Toots” Stevens of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers- and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
