Virginia A. Burhop - Jan. 9, 1932 - May 24, 2005

Virginia A. Burhop, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Virginia Ardell Ploeger was born January 9, 1932, at Alta, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Nley (Howe) Ploeger. She was baptized on April 3, 1932, and later confirmed on November 25, 1945, at the Emmanuel Evangelical Reformed Church, rural Schaller. Virginia attended a country school, Maple Valley #7, for eight years and attended Hayes High School south of Storm Lake. She graduated from there in 1949. Following graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper at Schaller Lumber Company and also as typist for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Omaha, Nebraska.

Virginia was married to Don Burhop at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on May 2, 1954. That same year, she became a member of St. John by profession of faith and has been a faithful member of that church since that time. Their marriage was blessed with three children.

Don and Virginia farmed south of Storm Lake until they moved to their present home in Storm Lake in the fall of 2001. Virginia was an active member of the Lutheran Church where she served in various offices of the Lutheran Circle and later as president of the Ladies Aid. Virginia also sewed many quilt tops for missions. She enjoyed being with family and friends, and she especially enjoyed the time spent with her three grandsons. She was always proud of her children and grandchildren and their achievements. In later years, Don and Virginia enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada.

She leaves to mourn her husband of 51 years, Don Burhop, of Storm Lake; one daughter, Kimberli and her husband Jim Polish of Madrid, Iowa; two sons, Kirby and his wife Jan Burhop of Schaller, Iowa, and Kelly Burhop of Argyle, Wisconsin; three grandsons, Karl Burhop of Iowa City, Iowa, Vince and Alex Burhop of Schaller; two sisters, Janette and husband Ron Willer of Schaller and Donna and husband Darold Lindstrom of Ida Grove, Iowa; three brothers, Melvin and wife Dorothy Ploeger of Ida Grove, Duane and wife Karen Ploeger of Storm Lake, and Warren and wife Nancy Ploeger of Schaller; one sister-in-law, Darlene and husband Len Wells of Denison, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bob.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday May 28, 2005, at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Rev. Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the E.N.R. Cemetery in Rural Schaller. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, May 27, 2005, from 4:00 until 8:00 where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
