Dean Bowers - Feb. 10, 1933 - June 27, 2005

Dean Bowers, age 72, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, June 27, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Dean Oliver Bowers was born February 10, 1933, in Churdan, Iowa, to Frank O. and Anna (Spence) Bowers. He grew up in the Churdan area where he attended country school and graduated from Bagley High School in 1951. Following graduation, Dean attended two years at Drake University and two years at Buena Vista College, graduating in 1955. He played baseball in high school and at both colleges and loved all sports.

During his youth, Dean was baptized into the Baptist Church. In 1968, he joined the Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he was an active member. He loved serving the Lord and celebrated his faith in his many positions in the church: Elder, choir member, soloist, Worship Commission, Organ Committee and the Food For Life Program.

On June 10, 1956, Dean was united in marriage to June Ellwanger in Lake View, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children: Nancy and Bruce.

Over the years, Dean worked as an office manager and accountant. He began his employment at AGRICO in Humboldt and Clinton in 1955. Then in 1968, Dean started worked for Vilas & Co., Thompson, Inc., Bil Mar and eventually Sara Lee until his retirement in 1996.

Dean was an active member of the Storm Lake community as a member of the Hy-Noon Kiwanis (past board member and song leader), Jewel Lodge (AFAM #309), Abu Bekr Shrine (member of the Shrine Band), as well as on the Hall of Fame Committee at Buena Vista University.

In addition, Dean was a member of the Storm Lake Muni Golf Course and currently served on the redesign committee for the AWAYSIS Project. He loved all sports, fishing, and music for which he participated in the Community Chorus performances of "The Messiah" and "Camelot" as well as others.

Above all, Dean loved his family and was proud of his community as evidenced in his tireless devotion to local events.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, June Bowers, of Storm Lake; daughter, Nancy Ann Mulder and her husband Wade of Crooks, South Dakota; son Bruce Alan Bowers and fiancé Kristen Weber of Chicago, Illinois; one grandson, Garrison Mulder; three brothers: Ray Bowers and his wife Bessie of Junction, Texas, Don Bowers and Dorothy of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dale Bowers and his wife Jeanine of Tucson, Arizona; one sister, Wanda Gilligan, and her husband Bill of Grimes, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and extended family members and friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harry and James Matthews.

Memorial services will be Friday, July 1, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service at the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2005, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 pm. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home at 8:00 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake in lieu of flowers.
