Arlene W. Kies - July 23, 1920 - Nov. 5, 2005

Arlene W. Kies, age 85, of Newell, Iowa, died Saturday, November 5, 2005, at her home in Newell.

Arlene W. Lussman was born on July 23, 1920, at her farm home in rural Westside, Iowa, to John and Augusta (Noelck) Lussman. She lived with her family in Crawford County and attended and graduated from Westside School.

Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Iowa, was the place of Arlene’s baptism, confirmation and marriage. She was baptized on August 22, 1920, and confirmed on March 25, 1934.

On April 30, 1942, Arlene was united in marriage to Harold Kies at Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa, by Rev. Theo. A. Tews. To this union, eight children were born: Violet, Gladys, Francis, Harlan, Gilbert, Alan, Kenneth and Russell. She and Harold lived in the Wall Lake area and moved to Newell in March of 1952. She was a proud mother and homemaker.

Arlene was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. She was a member of Ladies Aid, served on the funeral committee and taught Sunday school.

Arlene was active in her community delivering Meals on Wheels and was a member of Hobby Club and Coon Homemakers. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, counted cross-stitching and taking bus tours. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Vi Thraen and husband Jack of Omaha, Nebraska, Gladys Mandernach and husband Gene of Lakeside, Francis Kies and wife Carolyn of Storm Lake, Harlan Kies and wife Sandy of Newell, Al Kies and wife Dana of Tacoma, Washington, Ken Kies and wife Carol of Newell and Russ Kies and wife Donna of Fonda; grandchildren: Ron Cagle, Renee Seger, Brenda McFadden, Doug Mandernach, Rick Mandernach, Angie Mandernach, Jeff Kies, Mike Kies, Christy Kies, Jamie Kies, Melissa Payne, Pam Manary, Brandon Kies, Travis Kies, Kevin Kies, Katie Kies, Tony Kies, Amanda Kies, Erin Kies, Susan Kies, Michaela Kies; great grandchildren: Mckenzie Cagle, Brett Seger, Hudson Seger, Jordan Mandernach, Jaycee Mandernach, Hunter Mandernach, Preston Mandernach, Rebecca Mandernach, Allison McFadden, Megan McFadden, Lauren McFadden, Samantha Kies, Colton Payne and Gracelyn Kies; sister Helen Grundmeier of Arcadia, Iowa; brother-in-law Raymond Kies and wife Maxine of Lake View, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold on December 26, 1972; son Gilbert; grandson, Michael Mandernach; granddaughters, Julie Mandernach and Brittney Seger; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2005, at 10:30 am at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell on Tuesday, November 8, 2005, from 2:00-8:00 pm where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 pm.
