Evelyn Janet Wise - Nov. 6, 1910 - Feb. 20, 2004

Evelyn Janet Wise, age 93, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Evelyn Janet Sorenson was born on November 6, 1910, the daughter of John and Marie (Borshiem) Sorenson on a farm east of Newell. She attended country school and graduated from Newell High School in 1928. She finished her education from Iowa State Teachers College with a degree in Primary Education in 1930.

On June 10, 1936, Evelyn and Donald Johnston Wise were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Newell of which she was a member. To this union four children were born: Keith, Janet, Karen, and John.

Evelyn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and always an educator. She taught 1st and 2nd grades at Hayes Consolidated, south of Storm Lake and kindergarten at Pomeroy Grade School until her retirement in 1976.

Evelyn and Donald liked to travel and spent their winters in Texas during their retirement. She enjoyed reliving her school teaching days and being with her “Little Toddletunks” (grandchildren). One of her hobbies was crocheting covers for thousands of hangers and working in her flower garden.

Survivors include her son, John (Roberta) Wise of Newell; her two daughters: Janet (Glen) Pedersen of Newell, and Karen (Luke) Druivenga of Osceola, IA; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Philip Sorenson of Laguna Niguel, CA; extended family and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Sorenson; husband Donald on December 23, 1996; infant son Keith; infant granddaughters: Wendy Pedersen, Julie Wise and Diane Wise; a brother Merlin Sorenson, and an infant sister.

Funeral service for Evelyn Wise is Monday, February 23rd, at 2:00 p.m., at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Rev. Tom Hinshaw and Rev. Paul Johnston officiating. Special music will be provided by Roger Christiansen and Elaine Knudson singing a duet with Carol Hansen, organist. The flower committee consists of Dale and Judy Bodholdt and Arden and Ann Jorgensen. Pallbearers include: Randy Pedersen, Terry Pedersen, Sean Druivenga, Jason Druivenga, Donald L. Wise, Brian Wise, Dennis Koenen, and David Nase. Interment will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, Newell, Iowa.

Visitation is Sunday, February 22nd, 2:00-6:00 p.m., at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell. Friends who wish to send condolenses may do so online.
