Lois Irene Whalen - May 30, 1916 - Mar. 7, 2003

Lois Irene Whalen, age 86, of Newell, formerly of Schaller, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Newell Good Samaritan Home.

Lois Irene Whalen was born May 30, 1916, on a farm north of Galva in Cherokee County to Merritt A. and Mae A. (Walters) Lundberg. She lived with her family in the Galva area. She attended school at Galva and graduated from Galva High School with the class of 1934.

On February 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Clifford J. Anderson. To this union, two daughters were born, Aletha and Nancy. They farmed north of Galva on his family’s home place until his death when she and her daughters moved to Galva.

On April 23, 1957, she married Francis Whalen when they moved to Schaller. Years later she moved to Storm Lake and resided there until failing health when she went to the Newell Good Samaritan Home.

Lois enjoyed sewing for her family. She did upholstering for many years. She also loved to crochet and to make quilts for family members. She was also willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

She is survived by two daughters, Aletha and husband Roger Stephan of Storm Lake and Nancy and husband Dick Kollbaum of Varina; five step-daughters: Pat and Carroll Cone of Storm Lake, Colleen Werkmeister of Schaller, Nancy Epstien of Minnesota, Mickey and Pat Thyme of Missouri, and Mimi and John Rohweeder of Arkansas; seven grandchildren: Randy and Rachel Stephan of Alta, Bryan Stephan and friend Tammie Swanson of Storm Lake, Cheri and Wade Nehring of Newell, Robin Stephan of Storm Lake, Angie and Raul Andrade of Storm Lake, Lonnie and Larry Huegerich of Fonda, and Derek Klima of Fort Dodge; seven great grandchildren: Amanda Stephan of Marshalltown, Aaron, Alex and Aric Stephan of Alta, Justin Nehring of Newell, Nichole and Trevor Huegerich of Fonda; fifteen step-grandchildren; numerous step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family.

She is also survived by three sisters: Helen Lenhardt of Monroe, Wisconsin, Genevieve and Roy Meyer of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Dorothy Schutler of Cushing; and two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Lundberg of Dakota City, Nebraska, and Ruby Turner of Storm Lake.

Preceded in death by parents, Merritt and Mae Lundberg; first husband Clifford Anderson in 1949; second husband Francis Whalen in 1968; three brothers: Burdette, Harold, and Kenneth; two sisters, Ruth and Agnes; two sons-in-law: Dick Werkmeister and Armin Klima; one granddaughter Lisa Stephan; brothers-in-law: Leonard Schulke, Darrell Schutler, Arlin Lehnhardt, Ray Turner and Vernon Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Leona Lundberg.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements, with burial in the Galva Cemetery at a later date.

Funeral services will be at a later date.
