LeVerne Haahr Buffington - Dec. 17, 1923 - Nov. 12, 2003
LeVerne Haahr Buffington, age 79, of Newell, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Newell.
LeVerne Haahr was born on December 17, 1923, on a farm in the Newell area to George and Anna (Bodholdt) Haahr. She spent her childhood living with her parents on farms in the Newell and Sulphur Springs area. LeVerne began her education in a country school near Newell. She graduated from Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs with the Class of 1941.
On December 20, 1942, LeVerne was married to Louie Mills Buffington of Glenwood, Iowa, in the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Their union was blessed with a son, Roger, and a daughter, Diane. LeVerne was a loving wife and devoted mother who cherished her family and the time she spent with them. She was a farm wife and partner to her husband until his passing in 1973. She later worked as a bookkeeper for BJK Pump and Gas Company until her retirement in 1988.
LeVerne enjoyed time with her friends and relatives, community activities, music, sewing and listening to radio broadcasts of many years of wonderful Newell-Fonda basketball games.
Survivors include her son, Roger Buffington of Fort Collins, CO; her daughter, Diane Gray of Santa Monica, CA; grandchildren: Martin Gray of Santa Monica, CA, Nicole Buffington of Boulder, CO, and Mark Buffington of Fort Collins, CO; her sister Agnes and husband Art Barr of Newell, IA; nieces and nephews: Judy Anderson and Jan Worthan of Storm Lake, Iowa, John Gerken of Jefferson, IA, Keith Wilson of Tacoma, WA, Douglas Wilson of Brooklyn, NY, Bill Gemeiner of Omaha, NE, and Berklee Gemeiner of Belmond, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding LeVerne in death were her parents, her husband, her sisters Alma Wilson and Dorothy Gemeiner, infant brother and sister, Arthur and Edna Haahr, and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins in the Haahr, Bodholdt and Grau families.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 18, 2003, at 2:00 p.m at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday, November 17, 2003, anytime after 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where the family will be present from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
