Opal Remillard - Nov. 27, 1919 - Dec. 10, 2005

Opal Remillard, age 86, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, December 10, 2005 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home Nursing Facility in Spencer, Iowa.

Opal was born on a farm near Albert City, Iowa on November 27, 1919 to Ralph and Hulda (Siekman) Matthews. She attended Lincoln Lee Consolidated School until 5th grade, at which time she moved with her family to a farm near Sioux Rapids, Iowa. She then attended Sioux Rapids Community School, graduating with the Class of 1937.

In August of 1937, Opal became employed as Office Attendant for Northwestern Light and Power. She remained at that position for five years before working for many years for the late Dr. T. R. Campbell and for the late Dr. R. J. Mattice. She retired in 1986.

Opal was married to Waldron Remillard on December 16, 1942, and after his return from service in World War II, they made their home in Sioux Rapids. They were parents of three children: Kathleen, Kevin and Kristen.

Opal was a member of First United Church, United Women’s Fellowship, Eve Circle and Chapter GJ P.E.O.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband Waldron, and brothers Clifford, Leo and Darrel.

She is survived by her three children: Kathleen Remillard of Spencer, Iowa; Kevin Remillard of Des Moines, Iowa; and Kristen Schochenmaier and her husband, Kevin, of Mitchell, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Stephanie, Heather, Kelli, Matthew and Ryan; three grandsons-in-law: Chris, Fabian and Shane; three great-grandchildren: Nathan, Madison and Ethan; four sisters-in-law: Arlene Gerdeman of Urbandale, Iowa, Alma Matthews and Betty Matthews, both of Terril, Iowa, and Lois Remillard of Hermiston, Oregon.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids, with Reverend Kris Frank officiating. Burial will be Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
