Dorothy M. Rusk - Sept. 10, 1920 - Apr. 19, 2008

Dorothy M. Rusk, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Linn Grove, Iowa, died Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Dorothy Marguerite Clapp, the daughter of Arthur Edwin and Ella Marguerite (Claney) Clapp was born at Linn Grove, Iowa, on September 10, 1920. Dorothy lived her youth in the Linn Grove area and was a 1938 graduate of the Cornell High School. She continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On September 21, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lawrence Bruce Rusk at her parent’s home at Linn Grove. This union was blessed with four children: John Francis, Janet Kay, Linda Ann, and Bruce Arthur. Dorothy and Lawrence were devoted to their farming vocation and raised their family and farmed near Linn Grove for 41 years. In 1985, they moved into the town of Linn Grove where they made their home. This past February, Dorothy and Lawrence took up residency at Otsego Place in Storm Lake.

In her youth, Dorothy was a member of the 4-H Club and received state honors for her clothing design and seamstress talents. While she attended Buena Vista College, she was privileged to be selected as one of the homecoming queen candidates and also was a member of her college’s sorority. As her children were growing up, Dorothy remembered the value she received from belonging to the 4-H Club and will be remembered for the time she contributed to being a 4-H leader. Dorothy enjoyed music and when she was younger. She played the violin and in later years she played the piano and also sang in the church choir. She always took an active interest in the activities of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and she especially enjoyed following their sporting events. She will be remembered by her family and friends as an excellent seamstress and cook and for the many hours she devoted to sewing. Dorothy’s faith was a meaningful and important part of her life. She was an active member of the Riverside Presbyterian Church (PCA) of Linn Grove where she had been a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Ladies Aid, and the Geneva Fellowship.

The memories of Dorothy’s life will always hold a very special place in the heart of her husband of 68 years, Lawrence, of Storm Lake, Iowa, her children: John and Sara Rusk of Frederick, Maryland, Janet (Carris) Osborn and Dr. Thomas Osborn of Cincinnati, Ohio, Linda Sams of Nevada, Iowa, and Bruce and Evyonne Rusk of Linn Grove, Iowa, her 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, her brother and his wife, Troy and Betty Clapp of Linn Grove, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Dwight, three infant brothers and son-in-law, C. Timothy Carris.

Services for Mrs. Rusk were held Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Presbyterian Church PCA in Linn Grove, Iowa, with Pastors Russell Westbrook and Doug Corlew officiating. Burial is in Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. A visitation was held Monday, April 21, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
