Lavone Barnhart - May 14, 1920 - Oct. 9, 2008

Lavone Barnhart, age 88, of Sioux City, Iowa and formerly of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Lavone Ardel Joines, the daughter of Glen and Myrtle (Salzkorn) Joines, was born on May 14, 1920, at Slayton, Minnesota. As a child, Lavone moved with her family to the Sutherland, Iowa area, where she received her education in country schools near Sutherland and Calumet.

She was united in marriage to Donald B. Foster, on April 21, 1940, at Spencer, Iowa, and to this union one daughter, Charlotte, was born. Charlotte died in infancy and Donald was killed in action in Germany during World War II. In 1945, she moved to Spencer to make her home. On February 6, 1946, Lavone was united in marriage to Charles W. Barnhart in Topeka, Kansas. This couple was blessed with three children: Norma, Carol, and Steve.

Lavone was baptized and became a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Spencer. In November, 1957, Charles, Lavone, and children moved to Sioux Rapids and they became members of the Methodist Church there. Lavone had also been a member of the Buena Vista County Rural Letter Carrier Auxiliary and the O.D.O. Club for many years. In June of 1974, Charles and Lavone moved to Storm Lake. While residing in Storm Lake, she became a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church in 1996. Charles died on September 7, 1985. Lavone continued to live in Storm Lake until July 3, 2006, when she moved to the Floyd House in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

Lavone will be remembered for the enjoyment she received working with her flowers and gardens. She loved her family and friends very much and cherished the times she could spend with them. The memories she created for them are precious gifts they can enjoy and pass on to others.

Those who will always cherish and honor her memory include her children: Norma and David Hyndman of Skandia, Michigan; Carol Huffman of Oskaloosa, Iowa; and Steven and Maureen Barnhart of Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa; six grandchildren: seven great-grandchildren, one brother and his wife, Dennis and Ernestine Joines of Cambridge City, Indiana; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Joines of Spencer, Iowa; one brother-in-law and his wife, Raymond and Juanita Barnhart of California, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her infant daughter, Charlotte, two grandsons, Darin Hyndman and Tyler Jason (T.J.) Barnhart, three sisters: Carvana Austin, Evelyn Jackson, and Lola Mileham, and one brother, Eldred Joines.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will take place for one hour prior to the start of services at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
