Helen E. Pingel - May 30,1909 - Jan. 13, 2009

Helen E. Pingel, age 99, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Helen Emma Ehlers, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Ripke) Ehlers, was born in Coon Township, Buena Vista County, northeast of Storm Lake, Iowa, on May 30,1909. Helen was baptized into the Lutheran faith on June 13, 1909 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. She lived her youth in Coon Township and received her education at Zion Lutheran School. Helen was confirmed on April 13, 1924, at Zion Lutheran Church.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Pingel on September 8, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Marlys and Joyce. Helen and Art were engaged in farming near Rembrandt, Iowa, and she resided on that farm from 1933 until November of 1991. Art died on November 12, 1974.

When Faith Lutheran Church was organized in Sioux Rapids, Art and Helen became charter members and were active in serving in various capacities within the church. At the time Helen moved to Storm Lake, she transferred her membership to the Grace Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Grace Ladies Aid. Helen’s special interests included gardening, flowers, quilting and doing various types of fancy handwork.

Those who will always cherish their memories of Helen include her daughter, Marlys and Vernon Gregg of Cherokee, Iowa; her daughter, Joyce and William Peters of Ames, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jeffrey and Doris Gregg, Cherilyn and Jeff Boice, Andrea and Doug Urban, and Amanda Peters; her great-grandchildren: David and Elizabeth Gregg, Sarah and Kevin Callies, Timothy Gregg and Deborah Gregg, Kathryn and Angela Boice, Daniel, Rebecca, Naomi, Bethany, and Nathaniel Urban, and Addison Dunblazier; one brother, John Ehlers of Spencer, Iowa; one sister, Viola Ehlers, of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews, other relatives and her many friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; one brother, Helmuth; and one sister, Clara Boettcher.

Services for Mrs. Pingel will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Interment will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Friends may call on Friday, January 16, 2009, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present during the entire visitation.

The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements.
