Una Mae Strader - Dec. 11, 1924 - Mar. 07, 2009
Una Mae Strader, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at her home.
Una Mae Shultz was born December 11, 1924 in Newell, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence “Bumpy” and Laura (Mortensen) Shultz. She was baptized as an infant at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and later confirmed her faith there as a youth. Una Mae attended grade school in Newell before graduating from Sulphur Springs High School in 1942. She continued her education at what was then Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and received her teaching certificate in 1944.
On May 24, 1946, Una Mae was united in marriage to C.L. “Stub” Strader in Olathe, Kansas. The couple was blessed with four children: Shari, Bari, Brad and Troy.
Una Mae was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. She also enjoyed a variety of interesting pastimes. She was an avid fan of basketball and baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs. Una Mae liked sewing and crocheting, and she created beautiful porcelain dolls. She enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her many friends. Without realizing that she would be creating a future family treasure, Una Mae began keeping a journal of her life when she was 12 years old. She continued recording her life with daily entries in her diaries until the day she died. Una Mae loved teaching school and was a champion for seeing that every child received whatever input they needed to learn and grow scholastically.
But her family was always Una Mae’s greatest treasure. She loved to spend time with her children and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Shari Knapp of Omaha, Nebraska; sons: Bari (Kathy) Strader of Forsyth, Missouri; Brad (Maureen) Strader of Storm Lake; and Troy Strader of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren (listed oldest to youngest): Julie (Jason) Keyman of Cumming, Georgia; Molly Knapp and Jill Martinez of Omaha, Nebraska; Scott (Rebecca) Strader of Iowa City, Iowa; Katie Knapp of Omaha; Christopher Strader of Storm Lake; and Todd Strader of Forsyth, Missouri; great-grandchildren: Taylor Keyman, Benjamin Keyman, Samuel Martinez and Nicolas Keyman; one sister, Joyce Janning of Storm Lake; extended family and a host of friends.
Una Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Laura Shultz; her husband, Stub Strader; and her son-in-law, Ron Knapp.
Services for Mrs. Strader will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11th at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, 1615 W. Milwaukee Avenue in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.
