Thursday, December 24, 2009Opal Buse, age 97, of Albert City, and formerly of Marathon, died Dec. 19, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Burial was in the Laurens Cemetery in Laurens. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.
Opal Lorretta Cooklin, the daughter of Rudolph and Mae Cooklin, was born in Graettinger, on May 25, 1912. She began her education in Laurens, and later moved with her family to Marathon where she completed her schooling and graduated from Marathon High School in 1930.
Opal was united in marriage to Roy Buse on May 10, 1931, and this couple was blessed with one daughter, Phyllis. Following their marriage, Roy and Opal farmed for four years near Albert City, and then farmed for four years near Laurens. They then moved to a farm near Marathon where they were engaged in farming from 1940 to 1975. They retired and moved to Albert City in 1986 and Roy died on Dec. 14, 1987. Opal had been a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church since the age of 12 and also belonged to the United Methodist Women there. Since April 9, 2004, Opal has been a resident of the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Those who cherish her memory include her daughter, Phyllis Box of Story City; 4 grandsons: Tom (Kathy) Box, Terry (Cheri) Box, Tony (Chris) Box, and Tim (Kari) Box; 10 great grandchildren: Heidi Box, Michele Box, Jason Box, Justin Box, Tyler Box, Katie Walquist, Tara Box, Sydney Box, Brandon Box, and Naomi Box; 1 great great grandchild, Deshon Buchanon; her niece, Joanne Michelson; other extended family and friends.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; one sister, Florence Erickson; and one niece, Marlene Taylor.
