Harriet John, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.Harriet Cecilia Zatloukal was born April 10, 1928 in Pocahontas, Iowa to Martin and Maria (Benechek) Zatloukal. She was baptized in 1928 at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Pocahontas. Harriet attended grade school and later graduated high school from Ware Public School in Ware, Iowa.
On October 1, 1951, Harriet was united in marriage to Ward R. John at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Pocahontas. This couple was blessed with three children: Mark, Lance and Joni.
Harriet was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and the St. Mary’s Guild. She was also a member of the American Cancer Society. Harriet enjoyed working and worked at J. Varenhorst Fabrics for several years until she retired in 2002. Harriet loved traveling and has traveled to Mexico, Hawaii, Seattle, Canada, New York and many other places. She had a passion for polka and country western music. Harriet was very proud of her Czechoslavakian Heritage.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ward R. John of Storm Lake; her children: Mark John of Omaha, Nebraska, Lance and his wife Vicki John of Ames, Iowa and Joni John of Sioux City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Nathan McGraw of Des Moines, Iowa, Nicholas McGraw of Sioux City, Iowa and Michael Damske of Ames, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Joan Zatloukal of Seattle, Washington; extended family and many friends.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Maria Zatloukal; her brother, Martin Zatloukal; her sisters, Mary Schneider and Judy Swisher.
Visitation: 10:00 a.m. August 26, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. August 26, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
