Storm Lake, Iowa
Carl R. Shaw, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at his home in Storm Lake.Carl Raymond Shaw was born March 6, 1918, to Henry O. and Clara (Fosmark) Shaw in Cornell Iowa, in rural Clay County. He was baptized and confirmed at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa. He remained a member of that congregation for many years. His schooling was received in Lincoln-Lee country school, graduating in 1938.
On August 28, 1940, Carl was united in marriage to Isabelle Ruth Matthews at the Methodist Church parsonage in Storm Lake, Iowa. This union was blessed with a daughter, Kay Ann.
Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He entered the military in April of 1944, participating in the South Pacific, prior to his honorable discharge on March 17, 1945.
Over the years, Carl’s interests and hobbies were building homes for himself and helping many friends with theirs. He built three boats for himself and helped others. He loved boating and fishing, especially deep sea fishing. Carl and his brother, Omer, had a photographic studio in Storm Lake (Shaw’s Studio) and he remained an avid photographer his entire life.
After moving his family to California in 1956, he worked as a Journeymen Machinist, retiring in 1980.
Carl had a zest for life and enjoyed people thoroughly. He enjoyed wood working, fishing, gardening, boating, as well as, oil painting which he coincidentally taught himself. There were always “projects” on his workbench for himself and others and he was first to offer a helping hand when there was someone in need. After moving back to Storm Lake in 1987, Carl enjoyed traveling back to California for family gatherings. He was a member of the VFW – Alta Post 6172. His family will remember him as a man of dignity and strength, who exhibited true happiness in life.
