Vernon A. Smith, 80, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Maynard, Iowa, died Tuesday, Morning, May 26, 2026, at UnityPoint – St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Vernon Arthur Smith was born April 28, 1946, in Independence, the son of Eugene and Erma (Ross) Smith. In 1964, he graduated from Oelwein High School, Oelwein, Iowa. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. In 1968, he was united in marriage to Julie Ann von Glan at Wheatland Presbyterian Church in rural Breda, Iowa.

Vern drove semi for many different companies, including AMPI and OCCO. For 25 years, Vern owned and operated his own semi. He was a member of the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245 of Maynard and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Maynard. Vern enjoyed toy tractors, classic tractors, classic cars, the Green Bay Packers, visiting with others and goofing around with his grandsons.

Vern is survived by his wife: Julie Smith of Independence; 2 sons: Tony Smith Des Moines and Doug (Brandy) Smith of Marion; 2 grandsons: Brady and Conor Smith; brother: Dwight (Char Lynn) Smith of Macon, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Diana Smith of Macon, Missouri and Virginia Mitchell of Arlington; brother-in-law: Dick Butler of Wonewoc, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Loren Smith and Gale Smith; and sisters: Eunice Gordish, Alma Schlumbohm and Margaret Butler.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 30, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church in Maynard, with Rev. John Kerr officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, May 29, 2026, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.

Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard, with military honors by the Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post #245 Honor Guard, of Maynard.
