Frances was born on February 10, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised in Independence, Iowa, where she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1968. Growing up, she spent much of her time working in her family’s restaurant, the Colonial Inn, where she learned the value of hard work and caring for others.

Frances carried that compassion throughout her life. She worked at the Buchanan County Home in rural Independence, where she discovered her passion for caregiving. In 1979, she began her career at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, dedicating 30 years to caring for patients with kindness and empathy before retiring in 2009.

In 2000, Frances moved to Oelwein, Iowa, to be closer to her family, who meant everything to her. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who always wanted her children to be happy and took great pride in caring for them. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren, especially playing board games, taking day trips, and creating lasting memories together. Frances also enjoyed her daily coffee, staying connected on Facebook, and sharing updates about her life.

Frances is survived by her two children, Amie (Tyler) Trumblee of Hazleton, Iowa, and James (Kelley) Whitaker of Oelwein, Iowa; her five grandchildren, Molly, Mitchell, and Mia Trumblee, and Landen and Layten Whitaker; her sister, Becky Gray of Independence, Iowa; her nephew, David (Jill) Gray of Independence, Iowa; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Gladys Whitaker and a brother-in-law, Tim Gray.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Monday, April 13, 2026, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, Iowa. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, followed by burial at Wilson Cemetery.
