Verona R. Freyermuth, 85, of Hazleton, Iowa, died Friday morning, October 10, 2025, at West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa.

Verona Ruth Sherman was born on February 20, 1940, in Edgewood, Iowa, the daughter of Veryl and Genevieve (Lighty) Sherman. She was raised in Edgewood where she attended Community Bible Church with her family. Verona graduated as the valedictorian of the Edgewood High School class of 1958. She continued her education at Coe College and St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids until transferring to Upper Iowa College in Fayette. Verona graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in the summer of 1961. She met Elmer LeRoy Freyermuth while at Upper Iowa and they were married on December 17, 1960, in Edgewood, Iowa.

They lived on their farm near Hazleton for many years and spent three summers in Alamosa, Colorado when Elmer was getting his master’s degree. They were blessed with a daughter, Valerie. Verona taught first grade at Central School in Oelwein, in a portable building at Parkside School and then at Harlan School, until retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association. She enjoyed reading, mowing lawn, gardening, canning, baking and being outdoors.

Verona is survived by her daughter: Valerie Berryman of Waterloo; brother: Eugene (Shirley) Sherman of Pittsboro, North Carolina; and 2 nephews.

Verona was preceded in death by her parents; and husband: Elmer on January 26, 1988.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
