Marion E. Rau, 85, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Aurora, Iowa, died Friday evening, May 17, 2024, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Marion Elizabeth Arthaud was born January 26, 1939, in Oelwein, the daughter of Cyril Joseph and Mabel Frances (Damge) Arthaud. She graduated from Hazleton High School in Hazleton and attended nursing training in Dubuque, Iowa. On October 17, 1959, she was united in marriage to Richard Clair “Dick” Rau at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hazleton. Marion was a devoted farm wife and mother.

For many years she was a 4-H leader and Aurora Community Club member. She was a longtime member of the Aurora American Legion, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Marion was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching women’s basketball and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Cubs. Marion also enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, playing cards and Bingo. Most of all, Marion loved taking care of others and making sugar cookies for her grandchildren.

Marion is survived by her 3 children: Annette Kress (fiancé: Russell Holthaus) of Winthrop, Mike (Kim) Rau of Aurora and Steve (Missy) Rau of Stanley; 8 grandchildren: Ryan (Dawn) Kress of Winthrop, Jonathan Kress of Winthrop, Blake (Tiffany) Rau of Aurora, Bryan Rau (fiancée: Ashley Heims) of Aurora, Troy (Tatum) Rau of Stanley, Beth (Scott) Albrecht of Maynard, Tyler (Madison) Rau of Sumner and Tanner (Amanda) Rau of DeWitt; 12 great grandchildren; and sister-in-law: Pat Arthaud of Hazleton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Dick on February 23, 2020; and brother: Robert Arthaud.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at St. John Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. David M. Beckman, Deacon Tim Post and Deacon Jim Patera officiating.

Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, May 20, 2024, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa and for one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.
Interment: St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hazleton, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed in her name to the Aurora American Legion or Cedar Valley Hospice.
