Sandra “Sam” L. Pierce, 71, of Independence, IA, died on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at
her home in Independence, IA.

Sam was born on January 14, 1953 in Independence, IA, the daughter of Paul A. and Marjorie F. (Jones)
Pierce. She spent her early years living in Ryan and Monticello, IA, before the Pierce family made their
home in Winthrop, IA in 1968. Sam graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1971 and went on to
attend the University of Northern Iowa. Studying English and Journalism, Sam graduated in 1975 and
began teaching as a substitute teacher throughout the Buchanan County area.

In 1977, Sam started teaching full-time at the Independence High School as an English teacher.
she enjoyed her time with the students teaching them everything she knew, retiring in 2010. After
thirty-three years of teaching, countless students will remember her as being one of the best teachers.

She is survived by her sister, Vicki (Calvin) Wessel, Platteville, WI, her nieces; Kristin Wessel,
Platteville, WI, Renee (Mark) Vosberg, Cuba City, WI, and Jolene (Scott) Mitchell, Boscobel, WI, as well, as great nieces and nephews: Alaina, Olivia, Aidan, & Jaelynn Slack, Lance, Madison, & Levi Vosberg, and Macy & Hayley Mitchell, and her special friends, Patty Cameron and Jacquie McTaggart.

Sam is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Marjorie Pierce, and a great-niece who was born an
angel, Presley Mitchell.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 1 PM until 4 PM, with the funeral service being held
at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 6. A luncheon will follow. Friends and family are invited to share their favorite stories and memories of Sam.

The visitation, funeral, and luncheon will be held at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Following the luncheon, burial will be held at Rock Church Cemetery in rural Livingston, WI.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials out to the Sandra Pierce Memorial Fund at the Winthrop
State Bank in Winthrop, IA.
