Vanessa G. Lee, 58, of Independence, IA, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Unity Point - St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Vanessa was born on November 15, 1964, in Independence, IA the daughter of Paul and Nancy Yearous. She attended the East Buchanan Community Schools and went on to study at the La James International College of Hair Design in Waterloo, IA. She married Dennis VanGorder and Made their home in Aurora. They had two children together, and in the early 1980s, they built a home in rural Independence, IA. They later divorced.

In 2006, Vanessa married John Lee, and they made their home together in rural Independence, IA. Vanessa started working at the Subway Independence, in the early 90s and quickly earned her position as manager. She later managed Nancy’s Pit Stop in Ryan, IA, and also worked for several years as a housekeeper at the Buchanan County Health Center.

Vanessa enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Whether it was cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, Iowa Hawkeyes, or sharing margaritas, they always had a good time. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Taking the girls on shopping trips, dying easter eggs, and camping are just a few of her favorite memories with them.

She is survived by her father, Paul Yearous, Independence, IA, her significant other, Joseph Sprague, Independence, two children, Rick (Edina) VanGorder, Independence, IA, and Jessica (Robert) Jacobsen, Dewar, IA, two step-children, John Lee Jr., and Randdee Lee, six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Roxie Connolly and Annette (Ken) Armstrong, both of Independence, two brothers, Rex (Laurie) Yearous, and Jason (signifigant other Diane) Yearous, both of Independence, and many nieces and nephews.

Vanessa is preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Yearous, and her husband John Lee.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 PM until 5 PM on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the VFW Hall in Independence, IA.
