Julie Metzger Meyer, 67, of Rowley passed away due to heart failure on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

Julie was born June 7, 1954, in Cedar Rapids to Glenn & Mary (Kluber) Metzger. She graduated from Kennedy HS in Cedar Rapids in 1972. She married William John Bell in 1976 and lived together in McGregor. They later divorced in 1987.

Julie later met and entered into a loving union with Jerry Meyer in 1991. Together they lived in La Porte and bought and ran the sale barn together. Later they purchased a farm in Palo and established the Double J Ranch, and other associated business ventures over the years. Many will probably remember the elaborate and often infamous Spooky Trail Rides they hosted on Halloween. There were many years of adventures they shared with each other and the horses while there. Julie and Jerry married in 2006 after moving to the farm outside of Rowley. They lived there together until Jerry passed from his battle with cancer in 2013.

Julie had a strong interest in and love for horses her whole life, starting even as a young girl. She was actively involved in a number of show associations over the years and was always happy to share her knowledge and experience with others. She inspired so many in the barrel racing community with her drive and athleticism, coupled with her wit and patience as a teacher and friend to the many special people who had the pleasure of knowing her throughout her life.

Julie survived by; mother-in-law Norma Jean Meyer of Independence, IA; stepson Jesse Meyer of Independence, IA; stepdaughter Samantha Evans (Meyer) and her husband Dylan of Durant, OK, and their three children River, Henry, and Maxwell Evans; and many dear friends who were like family to her over the years.

Julie is preceded in death by her husband Jerry Meyer, and her parents Glenn and Mary Metzger.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 am until 1 pm on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Brandon Community Center in Brandon, IA.
