Nancy J. Hoffman, 77, of Independence, IA, died early Monday, January 11, 2022, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, IA.

Nancy was born to Leroy and Lena (Martin) Higgins; on August 29, 1944, on her family’s farm just north of Independence, Iowa. She attended elementary school at the country school not too far from where she grew up and later attended school in town. Nancy graduated from Independence High School in 1962. She married her high school sweetheart, Ken Hoffman, on September 15, 1963. They made their home in Bellevue, Nebraska while Ken served in the Air Force and moved back to Iowa when Ken was discharged, and their daughter Laurie was born. From there they lived in Nebraska and Idaho before settling back in Independence. Nancy was a devout Christian and was active throughout her church and community. She volunteered her time with the Buchanan County Hospital Auxiliary and her church. She also worked at Heartland Acres in Independence as a tour guide.

Nancy was family focused. Her faith and family were most important to her. She leaves so many special memories in the hearts of everyone she knew. She also enjoyed decorating, gardening, and reading. Her house was always pristine yet walking into her home you could feel the love. Her decorating skills transferred well into her work as a salesperson at Graham’s Clothing in Independence, where she worked for several years after high school and later at the Little Red School House in Independence.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurie (Corey) Maddux, Plano, TX, a granddaughter, Mallory, sister-in-law Eileen Higgins-Long, Nancy Higgins, Shirley (Mike) Andres, and many nieces and nephews.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Lena Higgins, her husband, Kenny Hoffman, four brothers: John, Richard, Arnie, and James Higgins, two sisters, Sally Murphy, and Deb Platt.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Reiff Family Center - Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family asks that those who plan on visiting or attending the service to please wear face masks.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, plant a tree in memory of Nancy, donate to your local hospice, or a charity of your choice.
