Virgil R. McClain, 94, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Monday morning, December 13, 2021, at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Oelwein.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein with Rev. Rick Johnson officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Military Memorial Service: 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein.

Memorials may be directed in his name to Grace United Methodist Church of Oelwein or the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing and masks are suggested at the visitation and service.

Virgil Russell McClain was born March 10, 1927, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of Leland Dewitt and Anna Hattie (Michaels) McClain. He graduated from Sumner High School in Sumner. Virgil proudly served in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. On June 1, 1950, he was united in marriage to Patricia Fauser at Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein. For many years, Virgil farmed south of Oelwein. After retirement, Virgil drove school bus for Oelwein Community Schools. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein, Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein and the Oelwein Historical Museum. For over 25 years, Virgil and Pat wintered in Mission, Texas. Virgil enjoyed dancing at the Coliseum and playing cards.

He is survived by his daughter: Pam (Mark) Mahoney of Urbandale; son: Jim McClain of Evansdale; grandchildren: Jason (Jessica) Mahoney, Joshua (Margaret) Mahoney, Zachary (Justine) Mahoney, Stephanie McClain, Cheyenne Chindlund and Justin McClain; and great grandchildren: Sidd, Jack and Rachel Mahoney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Pat; daughter: Cindee Kae McClain; brothers: Rollis McClain and Glen McClain; and sisters: Iva Heidt, Lucille Pattison, Hazel Miller and Genevieve Gusta.
