Dead in the Road.
Independence, Ia., Aug. 28.—Robert Burke, one of this county’s early settlers who lived about a mile from the city, and found lying dead on the road yesterday at 4 p. m. He was a man about 70 years old and had started to the postoffice. He was not far from home when found, nor is it likely that he had been lying in the road any length of time as it is a state road continually traveled. The supposition is that death was caused by apoplexy. He is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1829 and died Aug. 26, 1896. He is buried in St. John’s Cemetery.
