Marvel F. Dennie, 89, of Independence, Iowa, died peacefully of natural causes on Sunday morning, December 27, 2020 at Lexington Estate in Independence with her family by her side.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Church of Christ United, Winthrop, with Rev. Vicki Engelmann officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home in Winthrop and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop, Iowa.

Memorial Fund: Buchanan County Agricultural Education Foundation (Building Project).

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings and the recent surge in the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing will be required. Those in attendance are required to wear a mask. We encourage relatives and friends not able to attend the service to reach out to the family by leaving a message on the funeral home web site, by mail, text or phone.

Marvel Fern Funk was born on July 28, 1931 in Dunkerton, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence & Fern (Mueller) Funk. She graduated from Waterloo East High School in the class of 1949. Marvel continued her education at Iowa State University, Ames, where she received a BA in Home Economics and later, she received her master’s degree from the University of Tennessee. Marvel was united in marriage to Dale William Dennie on September 6, 1958 at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. They were blessed with five children; Gerald, Sherie, Terry, Karla and Chad. Marvel was a homemaker and worked on the family farm south of Winthrop until moving to Independence in 1991. During her life, Marvel had worked at the Iowa State Extension Service for several years, worked as a part-time substitute teacher in the East Buchanan Schools, worked at Bank Iowa in Independence, was the Buffalo Creek Golf Course manager, was the Youth Coordinator for Buchanan County Extension and also was a full-time grandmother.

Marvel was a member of the Church of Christ United and Kings Daughters. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Winthrop C & C Club and Buchanan County Porkettes and playing cards/bridge in numerous clubs. She was inducted into the Iowa State 4-H Hall of Fame in 2005.

Marvel is survived by her 5 Children: Gerald (Sandy) Dennie of Winthrop,

Sherie (David) McLaren of Independence,

Terry (Pam) Dennie of Winthrop,

Karla (Kevin) Hamdorf of Cedar Rapids &

Chad Dennie of Las Vegas, Nevada;

7 Grandchildren: Hollie (Rustin) Meyer, Kristi (Adam) Hoefer, Brooks McLaren, Nick (Katelin) Dennie,

Keith (Molly) Dennie, Kreslyn (Chris) Toyne & Alexandria Dennie;

8 Great Grandchildren: Harrison Meyer, Braxton McLaren, Carter McLaren, Hazel Dennie, Hadley Ericson, Jackson Toyne, Tyler Toyne & Allison Toyne;

Sister: Dorothy Holley of Duluth, Minnesota;

2 Sisters-In-Law: Helen Donnelly of Independence & JoAnn Funk of Independence and numerous

Nieces & Nephews.

Marvel was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Dale on April 19, 1982, 2 brother: Donald Funk & Melvin Funk and sister: Lucille Burk.
