Harold L. Benter, 84, of Oelwein died Friday evening on March 30, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be at 10:30AM on Wednesday, April 4 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7PM on Tuesday, April 3 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home and at the church for one hour before the services. He will be laid to rest in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion, Ross Reid Post 9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.

Harold was born on September 2, 1927 in Waucoma, Iowa, the son of George and Lillian (Lewig) Benter. He attended Hawkeye public School. He went to worked at Wilson Packing Plant in Cedar Rapids. He then served his country in the United States Army, where he received his Automotive Technician training.

On June 24, 1947 Harold was united in marriage with Berna Deane Murray at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Harold and Berna Deane made their home in Oelwein, where Harold was an Automotive Technician at Iowa Motor Company for 42 years, retiring in 1989. Following retirement, Harold worked at DeKalb for 10 years, as well as Kleppe’s Auto for 5 years.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he and his sons were ushers for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 in Oelwein.

Harold and Berna Deane spent many years camping at Lake Delhi and at Paradise Valley in Garnavillo while their children where growing up. Following retirement, they spent 6 years, during the winter months, in Arizona. They loved to watch all sports, playing cards, dancing, fishing, and traveling.

Harold loved spending time with his family, and would love to sing out “Together Again” by Buck Owens.

Harold will be dearly missed by all who knew, and continue to love him.

Left to celebrate Harold’s life is his wife of 64 years, Berna Deane Benter of Oelwein; his children: Russell (Diane) Benter, Carolyn (Steve) Coselman, Dean (Linda) Benter-all of Oelwein, and Debra (Jim) Baskerville of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 8 step-great grandchildren; his brother Leonard (Betty) Benter of Oelwein; his sister-in-law Connie Murray of Marion; and many beloved Nieces and Nephews.

In death, Harold has rejoined his parents, and his infant son Richard.
