Darlene Esther Pipho, 81, of Oelwein passed away on Sunday July 6, 2014 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday July 10, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 PM on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein and for an hour before the services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at rural Hazleton.

Darlene Esther Pipho was born on February 2, 1933 on the family farm in rural Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of August J. and Esther (Winning) Pipho. Darlene was baptized on February 4, 1933 at Hope Lutheran Church in rural Westgate, Iowa and confirmed there in November of 1946. She grew up in the Sumner area, starting her school years in a country school house and later went to Randalia School where she graduated. After graduation, Darlene babysat and did house cleaning. She taught Sunday School at Hope Lutheran Church in rural Westgate and also at Zion Lutheran Church once they moved to Oelwein.

Darlene dedicated her life to the care of her parents in their later years, and they couldn’t have been in better hands. She enjoyed her family and the many friends she had. In her last years, Darlene enjoyed spending her spare time doing needle work and puzzle books. She regularly corresponded with her family members and was the self appointed family historian. Her family sent her updates and she kept two books in which to chronicle them.

Darlene joined Oelwein Care on August 5, 2010. Her favorite activities included Cookin’ Corner, Bingo and Krazy Krafts. She and her roommate, Gladys, enjoyed many hours reminiscing and sharing a laugh or two. She also got a kick out of “Bella” the cat invading her room and making herself at home.

Darlene is survived by her sister Ruth Fivash of Spring Valley, California; her brother Jerry (Joyce) Pipho of Independence, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents August and Esther; her sisters: Dorothy and Lucille; and a nephew: Rocky Hennager.
