Marilyn J. Higdon, 86, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning, October 23, 2020 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa with Pastor John Sheda officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2020 and from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing will be required. The family asks that those in attendance wear a mask at the funeral home. We encourage relatives and friends not able to attend the service to reach out to the family by mail, text or phone.

Marilyn Jean Beatty was born May 11, 1934 at Independence, Iowa the daughter of Harold James and Ila Mae (Ritchie) Beatty. In 1952, she graduated from Independence High School and then received her CNA certification from Hawkeye Community College. On May 28, 1966, she was united in marriage to Robert Earnest Higdon at Hazleton, Iowa. Marilyn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Living Water Church in Independence. Marilyn was an outgoing person who enjoyed cooking, fishing, camping, going to the powwow in Tama and most of all her grandchildren.

Marilyn is survived by her children: Pam (Larry) of Independence, Neil Higdon of Independence, Irene (Ross) of Independence, Jessie Higdon of Waterloo and Sam Higdon of Texas; and many grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Robert on September 15, 2019; daughter: Linda; 4 sisters; and 3 brothers.
