Daniel Ray Schmit, 56 years old of rural Jesup, IA, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at his home following a long illness.
Dan was born November 20, 1963, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, IA, the son of Cletus Lawrence Schmit and Marcella Mae (Pierce) Schmit. He graduated from Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville with the class of 1982. He then attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo where he received a welding certificate.
On May 11, 1991, Dan was united in marriage to Leta Marie Keegan in La Porte City, IA. Dan worked at Omega Cabinets in Waterloo for 31 years and farmed. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville and the Catholic Order of Foresters in Gilbertville and Knights of Columbus in Jesup. He loved being on the farm and raising livestock. Spending time with his family had special meaning whether at home on the farm or while on vacation.
Dan is survived by his wife, Leta Schmit of Jesup; three sons, Jacob Schmit of Iowa City, Jonathan Schmit of Jesup, Caleb Schmit of Jesup; one daughter, Rachel Schmit of Jesup and his mother, “Marci” Marcella Schmit of Gilbertville; three sisters, Crystal (Dennis) Murphy of Central City, IA, Cheryl (Jim) Hall of Centennial, CO, Connie (Allen) Mangrich of Gilbertville; one brother, Gary (Anne) Schmit of Mason City, IA; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father Cletus, who died May 13, 2017; he is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Ryan Keegan; one niece, Callista Hall; and one nephew, James Keegan
Due to Federal and State guidelines because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dan’s funeral mass will be held privately, 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2020, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, IA. The public is invited to view a live stream of the funeral mass via the parish Facebook page. Search for Immaculate Conception & St. Joseph Catholic Churches Iowa on Facebook and then click on the funeral link.
Burial will be at Sancta Maria Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville. Memorials will be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Bosco System and to Cedar Valley Hospice. Online condolences may be posted at www.White-MtHope.com
With safety for all in mind, but still share Dan with extended family and friends, the family encourages you to drive through the funeral home driveway and say goodbye to Dan through the funeral home window, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd.
