Barbara J. Siggelkov, 84 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. She was born on August 24, 1935, in Independence, the daughter of Amel Joseph and Anna Augusta (Schmidtkonz) Melvin. She graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1953. She later earned her LPN license. On September 15, 1962, she and Herschel Charles Siggelkov were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. She was a home maker, raised 4 children, and later worked at Immanuel Lutheran as a secretary. She continued to volunteer at the church after retirement.

She always had a deep connection with Immanuel Lutheran. She was baptized and confirmed there. She also served on many committees and taught Sunday School. She especially enjoyed the little children.

Mrs. Siggelkov is survived by 2 daughters, Martha (Alfred) Heinze of Oelwein, Iowa, and Laura (Larry) Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, 1 son, David (Danielle) Siggelkov of Rockford, Illinois, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 1 sister, Mary Walztoni of Independence, 1 brother, Pastor James (Sandy) Melvin of Janesville, Wisconsin, many nieces and nephews, and her neighbor, Christina Domeyer of Independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2001, 2 sons, James Siggelkov and Adam Siggelkov in infancy, 1 brother, William Melvin and 1 grandson in infancy.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. A Memorial Service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence at a later date. White Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of arrangements. On line condolences may be left at www.White-MtHope.com. A Memorial Fund for Immanuel Lutheran Church has been established.
